Azathoth interview - Dark Fortress
Century Media Records/All

Version fançaise - version anglaise

LG : What is your motivation to write this new album?

Our motivation is always the same: to express the dark and negative side of our souls through this kind of music. It's not important for us to belong to any kind of scene. We just do, what we have to do in our opinion to express ourselves. So it doesn't matter to us, if people
call it Black Metal, Dark Metal, Death Metal or whatever…it's simply dark, cold and negative.

What about the writing process of this new album?

Again I already wrote the whole lyrical concept before the others started with the song writing process. That's much easier in a way for the others do have a better imagination then of the feeling and emotions the music shall reflect to create a unity with the lyrics. And that's always the most important thing for us: to create a unity between the music, the lyrics and visual side of an album.

Could you tell me more about the lyrics? And where do you find your ideas/themes?

The complete album deals with paranormal experiences I have made by myself throughout the years. When I wrote the lyrics I tried to see what these lost souls might see after death and I tried to think, what they might think. And my experiences were the basement therefore,
my source of inspiration.

Why did you decide to use a french title? And why "Séance"?

That was absolutely clear for me shortly after I have started writing the lyrics for the album. The whole concept of the album was fixed in my mind and since the whole album can be
seen as a "Séance" for it deals with paranormal experiences and one could say, that each song summons another ghost.

This album includes more feelings. Is it the reason why you decided to create a concept album or is it for another reason?

In general most of our albums are concept albums; seen from the lyrical point of view for every album of ours deals with death with all its different emotions I combine death with,
sadness, hatred, pain, loneliness for example. That's always kind of a quest for us to let the expressed emotions of the lyrics also reflect though the music.

I know that Asvargr comes from Carnage. Is it the reason why your music was composed some parts of trash?

Yeah, in deed most of the thrash parts on the album are written by Asvargr, because he's still totally into that old school metal stuff. Doesn't matter if it's Heavy Metal, Speed Metal, Thrash Metal. So from time to time we use some of these thrashing parts in case they fit to the feeling of the song.

Can you tell me what your main influences are?

Our musical influences are bands like Emperor, Mayhem, Burzum, Thorns, Bathory but also more avandgardistic stuff. Lyrical wise my source of inspiration always has been my fascination for death and my antipathy concerning life. Bands, that influenced me
lyrically are Katatonia, Anathema or My Dying Bride.

And now, do you include such melodics themes inside a song as well as some Death/ Black themes because of these influences or, is it something natural in your compositions?

It's definitely something natural in our compositions for we have so many influences musically and on the other hand it's also something we always claim to, to create various music, which reflects various emotions.

What about your tour for the promotion of this new album?

There are a few plans to promote the album in early 2006 on a tour. Actually it would be our first tour thus far and we hope, there will be the right chance given with a good package.

What do you listen on tour or at home?

Most of the time, I do not listen to Black Metal anymore. When it comes to Black Metal, I prefer to listen to the early releases of the 90's, such as Burzum "Hvis lyset tar oss", Burzum "Filosofem", Emperor "In the nightside eclipse", Satyricon "Dark medieval times",
Abigor "Verwüstung" for example. Concerning the latest Black Metal outputs there are just a few bands left, that I appreciate for example, Secrets Of The Moon "Carved in stigmata wounds", Satyricon "Volcano", Anorexia Nervosa "Redemption process" or also from France Nehemah. But it really happens not that often anymore, that I listen to Black Metal nowadays. Most of the time I listen to my absolute favourite and timeless album of Anathema "Alternative 4", everything of Katatonia, Opeth, My Dying Bride or Gramophone for example.

What would you suggest to listen actually ?

That depends on the personal taste of each person. Since I am a more depressive person naturally I prefer to listen to the already mentioned groups.

Last question witch guitars and amplifiers are you using (in session and in tour)?

V Santura uses a B.C. Rich Warlock and a Marshall JCM 900 Amp. Asvargr uses B.C. Rich
Beast and a Jackson Randy Roads and also a Marshall JCM 900 Amp. Our bass player uses
a Rickenbacker 4001 and a Trace Elliott RAH 500-12 Amplifier.
